April Student Spotlight

Art Therapy \\ Grad May 2015

What tool can you not create without? My hands! Whether I’m going to use a pencil, charcoal, paint, yarn, a camera, or anything else my hands are always the most important tool.

Who inspires you professionally? My mom. She is such a creative person who introduced me to the wonderful world of arts and crafts and fine arts. She’s the most supportive person I know and continues to inspire me everyday to work and further my career.

If you could live anywhere in the world for one year, where would it be and why? If I could live anywhere for a year it would be County Kerry, Ireland because I would love to be where my grandmother grew up and from pictures it just looks like a beautiful and inspiring place
What is something you wish you had learned earlier? Don’t stress over little mistakes, everything works out eventually.

What tool can you not create without? A piece of paper and a writing utensil because you never know when that idea will pop into your head. Also the Adobe programs because those are what help me create my artwork.

Who inspires you professionally? My dad. He always tells me that after college everything is a competition in order to get a job. If you put in hard work and effort into everything you do, you will get to were you want to be. And that is what I have been doing.

If you could live anywhere in the world for one year, where would it be and why? England. A large part of my family lives over there. London, to me, is one of the best cities in the world and I would love to follow my soccer team (West Ham) because I have grown up supporting them ever since I was a small child.
What is something you wish you had learned earlier? Graphic Design. I started to study it very late in High School and I wish I had started earlier because I really enjoy it.

Art Therapy \\ Grad May 2016

What tool can you not create without? An eraser!

Who inspires you professionally? Laura Hudson, the founder of Hearts and Crafts. Hearts and Crafts is a non-profit organization that provides art therapy mainly for children who have lost a parent or a sibling. She puts her heart and soul into helping these children, and I aspire to help children with art therapy as much as she does.

If you could live anywhere in the world for one year, where would it be and why? If I could live anywhere in the world for a whole year it would be on the Island of Santorini in Greece, because of its aesthetic beauty, tranquility, and its culture.
What is something you wish you had learned earlier? It is okay to be yourself and to not spend so much time trying to be like everyone else.

December Student Spotlight

Art Therapy \\ Grad May 2016

What tool can you not create without? I absolutely cannot live without a little pocket sketchbook and a pen because you never know when creative spark will happen. Some of my best work started as a thought late at night right before falling asleep – I just quickly wake myself up, reach above my head and grab the pen on my shelf to jot down whatever details I need to develop the idea further in the morning.

Who inspires you professionally? Two people that have consistently inspired me in the field of art are my former art school instructor Charlene Margiotta and my high school art teacher Miss Piccone. They always pushed me to better myself and not focus so much on the perfect final product but just the process of making the art.

If you could live anywhere in the world for one year, where would it be and why? Two places, London for its amazing historical sites, music, art, and architecture. And Puerto Rico because I am majority Puerto Rican and have always had a deep connection with the culture, especially its music and artwork.
What is something you wish you had learned earlier? To be easier on myself and my work. I ‘ve learned that art does not need to be perfect, although that is something I am still trying to remember.

November Student Spotlight

Graphic Design \\ Grad May 2015

What tool can you not create without? My camera, my sketch book and my friends. Mostly my friends- I like to
create things for them.

Who inspires you professionally? Lester Beall. The way he used flat color and shapes mixed with photographs is so effective and simple. His simplification of shapes proved to me that a design can still be effective without being complicated. He inspires me to mix photos and vector shapes.

If you could live anywhere in the world for one year, where would it be and why? Portland, I went there this summer along with many other places on my road trip across the states. Everything seems exciting but laid back. Being able to commute on a bike or skateboard
everyday would be amazing.
What is something you wish you had learned earlier? To have confidence in my work.
